North Valley Hospital began a year-long pilot program in August of 2008 for our patients to access acupuncture services. Acupuncture may provide effective treatment for some select acute and chronic conditions. In our pilot program, we are offering acupuncture treatment that may be used along with conventional medicine and treatment to:
- relieve post-operative pain
- fibromyalgia
- osteoarthritis
- chronic menstrual cramps
- chemotherapy-induced nausea/vomiting
- headache, migraines, tennis elbow
- low back pain
- post-operative dental pain
How does acupuncture work?
The acupuncture points are places on the body that when accessed with the acupuncture needles stimulates nerves, muscles, and connective tissue. This stimulation appears to boost the activity of the body’s natural painkillers and increase blood flow.
Are there any side effects?
People often feel a deep sensation of relaxation during and following the treatment. It is possible that a patient may feel faint during treatment, but this is a rare occurrence. Occasionally, the acupuncturist will prick a small vessel under the skin, leaving a bruise. The bruise naturally disappears in a few days.
Are acupuncture services covered by insurance?
Each insurance plan is individual as to whether it will cover acupuncture services. Patients who are interested in acupuncture services would need to contact their insurance provider to determine reimbursement.
We are more than happy to answer any questions you may have regarding acupuncture and our other Planetree programs. Also, please feel free to visit the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine National Institute of Health at nccam.nih.gov/health/acupuncture/.
