NATIONAL COMMISSION RECOGNIZES NORTH VALLEY HOSPITAL PLANETREE
COMMUNITY HEALTH RESOURCE LIBRARY AS BEST IN STATE
The U.S. National Commission on Libraries and Information Science (NCLIS) selected North Valley Hospital Planetree Community Health Resource Library as state winner for the 2006 NCLIS Health Information Award. NCLIS Executive Director states, “Yours is among the best programs in the country for reaching out to local communities and providing effective consumer health information.”
The Community Health Resource Library will be recognized by NCLIS at their Health Information Forum on May 3, 2006 and in a national report to be published after the forum. The mission of North Valley Hospital’s Community Resource Library is ‘to provide the public with open access to a broad spectrum of relevant and current health and medical information; to better able consumer to make informed health care choices; to encourage individuals to active participants in their care.’
Physicians and community members, as well as North Valley Hospital staff, participate in the examination and credibility or usefulness of each therapy represented by the part of the collection focused on complementary (alternative) therapies. The collection includes consumer health and medical texts on a comprehensive variety of subjects including: addiction/alcoholism; anatomy/physiology; animal health; bones/joints/muscles; cancer; cardiovascular systems; care giving; children’s health; complementary (alternative) therapies; consumer health issues; death/dying; dental care; drugs; ear/nose/throat; endocrine system; environmental/occupational health; eye; fitness/exercise/sports medicine; gastrointestinal system; general medicine; general medical reference; genetics/genetic disorders; health care delivery systems and economics; immune system; infectious diseases; men’s health; mental disorders; mental health; nervous system; nutrition/food/weight control/eating disorders; older adult needs; physical/emotional abuse; pregnancy childbirth; psychotherapies; rehabilitation medicine; skin/hair/nails; stress; substance abuse; urinary system; women’s health; young adults; spiritual practices; children’s books.
Anyone can use the Planetree Community Health Resource Library at North Valley Hospital on Mon. - Thurs. from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. or by appointment. A trained volunteer is on hand to assist patrons in finding information on healthcare issues, both from the library’s shelves and from the Internet. Internet sites are evaluated by physicians and a list of sites is available at the library or on the hospital web-site.www.nvhosp.org
