North Valley Hospital opened up its Community Health Library in December 2004. This library is the first library in this area that is primarily set up to offer healthcare information to the public. It contains movies, fictional reading and children's books in additional to the educational information. These items can be taken out of the library to patient rooms and patient waiting areas, and can be used by patients, families and visitors. Volunteering in the library would involve manning the library during open hours, helping check out lending material, and assisting the public in accessing health information either on the computer or with the 400 consumer health books. Specific training will be available for the library volunteers.
The Dog Visitation Program started in June, 2004. Dog handlers and their dogs complete a certification program by the Delta Society to visit patients in the hospital. A volunteer escort accompanies the dog handlers and their dogs through the hospital visiting patients and visitors. One of our volunteer escorts, Jill, says "It is so wonderful to see the look on the patient's faces when the dog comes in their room." About one hour every week or two would assist this already successful program.
In August 2004, an Information Desk was created for the hospital entrances. The volunteer attending this desk assists the public and patients in wayfinding, answering questions and mail delivery. Having a volunteer in this lobby adds warmth and a cheerful presence to the entrance of the hospital.
Musicians are welcome to volunteer their talents for the enjoyment of the patients, visitors, and staff.

Hospital Departments welcome volunteers to work in their specific areas such as Pharmacy, Health Information Management, The Birth Center, Foundation, Information Systems, or Surgical Services. If you have specific experience or interest in working in certain areas of the hospital, please ask us about these opportunities.
If you have questions or would like to sign up for any of these opportunities, please call LuAnn Basirico at (406) 863-3667. We will offer orientation and training sessions for each of these postiions. The amount of time you woul be able to volunteer can be varied such as one or two hours a month or a few hours weekly.
Volunteers make a difference at NVH!
