What is a Sleep Study?

A sleep study involves going to sleep overnight in a quiet, safe and private sleep lab designed like a bedroom where technologists monitor breathing, brain waves, heart rhythm, oxygen levels and body movements. The information gathered during the sleep study allows the doctor to see if you have a sleep disorder. To help ease anxiety, patients are encouraged to tour the clinic before their sleep study. While all patients with sleep disorders are seen by the sleep medicine physician, some may be referred to a lung or ear/nose/throat specialist, psychologist, oral facial surgeon or a specially trained therapist.

 

Why Is Sleep Important?

Sleep is the downtime our brain and body needs to rest, restore and refresh us so that we can lead a healthy and productive life. During sleep, hormones and brain chemicals are replaced and balanced. Sleep keeps us sharp, alert, balanced and functioning smoothly. It is now recognized in the medical community that sleep disorders can lead to:

When Should You Consider Having A Sleep Study Performed?

You should consider having a sleep study if you have excessive daytime sleepiness; snore a lot; have spells of no breathing during sleep; have seizures at night; or have bizarre behavior while asleep. You may consider doing a sleep study if you have excessive daytime sleepiness; are overweight; or have a neck size greater than 17 ½ inches (men) or 16 inches (women).
